What does it do?
Indexing adds numbered prefixes to every folder and file in a data room, in the order they appear. Reviewers can then refer to "document 3.2.4" in questions and reports, and the numbers update when you reorder content.
Who is it for?
Deal teams running due diligence, where buyers, lenders and lawyers need a shared reference for each document, and anyone who prints or exports a data room index for a disclosure schedule.
How does it work?
Turn on Index documents in the data room settings. Since March 25, 2026, new Data Room, Deal Team and Enterprise rooms start with indexing on. Since August 26, 2026, editors can download the index as a CSV file, and on October 6, 2026, export was extended to large rooms through a prepared download.
Which plans include it?
Indexing is on Data Room, Deal Team and Enterprise; on Free and Business the toggle is not available. Exporting the index to CSV is on Deal Team and Enterprise. See pricing.
How does it compare?
A numbered index is standard in virtual data rooms used for M&A. Peony generates it automatically and keeps it in sync as files move.

Common questions
Does Peony number documents in a data room index?
Yes. On the Data Room plan and above, Peony numbers every folder and file automatically and keeps the numbers in sync as content moves. Deal Team and Enterprise can export the index to CSV.
