Supported File Formats (Including Live HTML & AI Artifacts)
Every file format Peony renders in its secure in-browser viewer — PDF, Office, images, video, and live .html/.htm. Peony renders HTML natively with JavaScript executing, so interactive AI-generated artifacts run as intended, under per-viewer watermarks, screenshot protection, and a full audit trail.

Peony renders files in a secure in-browser viewer — viewers see the document, never the underlying file. This page lists every format Peony displays, including live HTML, and how each one renders.
Which file formats can Peony display?
Peony renders all of these natively in the in-browser viewer — no plugin, no download:
- Documents — PDF, Word (DOCX), Excel (XLSX), PowerPoint (PPTX), plain text, Markdown
- Web & AI artifacts — HTML and HTM, rendered live in the viewer (JavaScript runs), so interactive pages and AI-generated artifacts work as intended
- Images — PNG, JPG, GIF, WebP
- Video — MP4 (including H.264), streamed in place
- Archives — ZIP (contents shown as a browsable folder)
Every one of these renders under the same security layer — per-viewer dynamic watermark, screenshot protection, NDA gate, page-level analytics, instant revoke, and a full audit trail. The original file never leaves Peony's servers; only the rendered view streams to the viewer. See How File Storage Works.
Does Peony support HTML and AI-generated artifacts?
Yes. Peony renders .html and .htm files natively in the viewer, with JavaScript executing — so an interactive artifact generated by Claude, ChatGPT, or any tool (a dashboard, calculator, model, or mini-app) runs live for the recipient, exactly as it would in a browser. It is not flattened into a static image or a PDF.
This matters because most data rooms convert HTML to a PDF before showing it — which kills any interactivity and turns a working app into a flat page. Peony keeps the artifact live and wraps it in the full control layer: each viewer sees their own dynamic watermark burned into the page, screen-capture is blocked on desktop (and on mobile with Screenshield), every page-view is logged, and you can revoke access instantly. You get the live artifact and complete oversight of who opened it, for how long, and on what device.
How does each format render?
- PDF — custom secure, page-by-page viewer.
- HTML / HTM — rendered live in the viewer; JavaScript executes, so interactive artifacts stay interactive.
- Excel — hardened in-browser spreadsheet viewer.
- PowerPoint — converts to browsable pages.
- Word, text, Markdown — rendered as formatted pages.
- Video — streams in place.
- Images — shown at full resolution under the watermark.
What if my file format isn't listed?
Convert it to PDF and upload — PDF is a first-class format with the full viewer and security layer. Very large multi-GB videos can time out on slow connections; retry or compress first. If there's a format you need that isn't supported yet, contact support — the list grows.
