Upgrade, Downgrade, or Cancel
Upgrade through the pricing cards in the upgrade dialog. Downgrade to Free is a request confirmed by support. Other plan changes and cancellation go through support or the Stripe portal.
Last updated July 22, 2026
There is no single "Change Plan" screen in Peony. Upgrades happen in the upgrade dialog (the pricing cards). Downgrading to Free is a request you send from the Billing dialog, confirmed by our team. Any other plan change — a specific lower tier, annual billing, a discount code, or a full cancellation — is handled by support or through the Stripe portal. Your data rooms, files, links, and analytics are never deleted — only the feature set changes.
Upgrade
Upgrades are self-serve and take effect immediately.
- Open the user menu (your avatar, top right).
- Click Upgrade to [plan].
- In the upgrade dialog, on the pricing cards, pick Business ($30/admin/mo), Data Room ($52/admin/mo), Deal Team ($64/admin/mo, min 4 admins), or Enterprise (custom).
- Enter your card (or use the saved one) and confirm the pro-rated charge.
The charge is pro-rated for the rest of the current cycle, and the pro-rata value of what you already paid is credited toward the upgrade. New features unlock within a few minutes.
No discount-code field. The self-serve upgrade has no place to enter a promo or discount code. If you have one, email sean@peony.ink and we'll apply it manually and adjust the charge.
Deal Team needs 4 admins. Deal Team ($64/admin/mo) has a 4-admin minimum. If you only need a few of its features on a smaller team, stay on Data Room and ask support what's possible.
Downgrade to Free
Downgrading to Free is not an instant self-serve switch — it's a request our team confirms.
- Open the user menu (your avatar, top right).
- Click View billing.
- In the Billing dialog, click Downgrade to free.
- You'll see "You will be notified when it's confirmed." The change is applied once support processes it.
Downgrade to free is workspace-wide. It moves the whole workspace to Free, not just your own seat. If you only want to drop your own admin seat while teammates keep paid access, have a teammate remove you instead — open the Settings menu (bottom-left of your home screen, not the per-room Settings tab) and click Invite admins, then hover your name and click the cross. You're billed for the remaining seats going forward. See Add or Remove Admin Seats.
What you lose
Data Room → Business:
- Dynamic watermarking (all watermarking)
- Sections and text blocks in rooms
- Advanced NDA (signed PDF, countersign, audit trail)
- Custom domain (falls back to your Peony subdomain)
- Granular per-file (multi-level) permissions
- Screenshield (advanced screenshot protection)
- Audit trail
- Index documents (numbered prefixes across documents)
- Visitor Q&A and AI room generation
- Unlimited storage and file size
Business keeps allow/block visitor lists, basic (desktop) screenshot protection, download prevention, email verification, custom logo and background, unlimited e-signatures, and data room creation.
Business → Free:
- Basic screenshot protection (desktop)
- Download prevention
- AI document Q&A
- Download analytics, drop-off analytics, and analytics exports
- Email verification on links
- Simple NDA (acknowledge-only)
- Custom logo and background
- Allow/block visitor lists
- Data room creation (Free can't create data rooms)
- Unlimited e-signatures (Free is capped at 3 sent agreements per month)
Your existing data rooms stay accessible either way. Links continue to resolve, but without the protections from the previous tier.
How Pro-Rating Works
Upgrading mid-cycle charges the difference between old and new plans, pro-rated for the remaining days.
Example. Business ($30/admin/mo), one admin. Day 10 of a 30-day cycle, you upgrade to Data Room ($52/admin/mo). The pro-rated charge is around $15 (two-thirds of the $22 difference). Next cycle: full $52.
With multiple admins, pro-rating applies per admin. See Add or Remove Admin Seats.
Change to a Specific Lower Tier, or Bill Annually
The self-serve Downgrade to free button only moves you to Free. It can't move you between paid tiers (for example, Deal Team back to Data Room), and there is no self-serve annual toggle or discount-code field.
For any of these, email sean@peony.ink:
- Move to a specific lower paid tier
- Switch to annual billing (arranged by support, charged to your card on file)
- Apply a discount code or account credits
- Undo a Deal Team upgrade you didn't need
We process these manually, usually within a business day.
If Checkout Fails
Stripe checkout occasionally fails for some card/region combinations.
- Try a different card. A different bank is usually the fix.
- Still failing? Email sean@peony.ink or deqian@peony.ink with:
- The plan you were upgrading to
- What you saw (error, spinner, silent failure)
- A screenshot if you have one
- You'll receive a direct Stripe invoice link that bypasses in-app checkout. Pay through that and your workspace auto-upgrades within a few minutes.
This is a known issue being fixed. The manual link workaround is reliable.
Cancel or Delete Everything
Cancelling entirely, or cancelling and deleting all your data, is not self-serve. Downgrade to free keeps your workspace and content on the Free plan — it does not delete anything.
To fully cancel your paid plan, or to delete your account and all its data, email sean@peony.ink with your account email and say what you want removed. We'll confirm the cancellation date before your next billing date so you keep access through the paid period, then process the cancellation — and the deletion, if you ask for it.
Billing, Refunds, and the Renewal Charge
Billing is provisioning-based: once a data room is provisioned, we carry the hosting cost for the full cycle whether you use it or not. Because of that:
- Monthly charges aren't pro-rated. After the renewal date, the pending charge for the new cycle can't be written off.
- Set your cancellation before the next billing date so you're not charged for a cycle you won't use, while keeping full access until then.
- Peony doesn't offer refunds unless a refund was explicitly agreed in writing before purchase. When something's wrong, the answer is a downgrade or cancellation before your next billing date.
If you have a genuine edge case (charged after cancelling, billed for a seat you removed, or a Deal Team minimum you weren't aware of), email sean@peony.ink with your account email and the charge date. We handle these manually.
Common Questions
Where do I change my plan? I can't find a "Change Plan" button. There isn't one. Upgrades are in the user menu under Upgrade to [plan] (pricing cards). To move down to Free, use View billing → Downgrade to free. For any other change (a specific lower tier, annual billing, a discount), email support.
Is my earlier payment credited when I upgrade mid-cycle? Yes. The pro-rata value of what you already paid is credited toward the upgrade, and upgrades take effect immediately.
How do I apply a discount code? There's no discount-code field in the self-serve upgrade. Email sean@peony.ink and we'll apply it and adjust the charge manually.
Can I downgrade only myself and leave my teammates on the paid plan? No — Downgrade to free affects the whole workspace. To drop only your own seat, have a teammate remove you: open the Settings menu (bottom-left of your home screen, not the per-room Settings tab), click Invite admins, hover your name, and click the cross. The workspace is billed for the remaining seats going forward.
Can I bill annually instead of monthly? Yes, but it's not a self-serve toggle. Email support and we'll arrange annual billing on your card on file.
I upgraded to Deal Team but didn't realize it needs 4 admins. Can I move back? Yes. Email sean@peony.ink — we'll move you back to Data Room and sort out the billing difference manually.
After a plan change, some features look blurred or grayed out. Is that a bug? Features above your current tier appear blurred or grayed on purpose. If something you're actually entitled to stays grayed after a change, that may be a bug — contact support and we'll look into it.
Can I apply credits from an old account to a new one? Yes. Create the new account, upgrade it, and email us — we'll apply the credits manually so they land on your next invoice.
I cancelled but was still billed. Email sean@peony.ink with your account email and the charge date. We'll confirm the service was terminated and correct the erroneous charge manually. Corrections appear on your statement within 5-10 business days.
