Screenshot Protection: What's Blocked and What Isn't
An honest breakdown of Peony's screenshot protection. What's blocked on desktop, what Apple and Google don't allow on mobile, and what to do in the meantime.
Last updated April 10, 2026
Screenshot protection blocks native screenshot shortcuts and screen recording on supported desktop browsers, logs capture attempts even when blocked, and works together with dynamic watermarks.
For mobile, enable Screenshield (advanced screenshot protection, available on Business and Enterprise tiers) to block screenshots and screen recording on iPhone, iPad, and Android as well.
What It Does
When enabled on a link, Peony:
- Blocks native screenshot shortcuts on supported desktop platforms. Cmd+Shift+3, Cmd+Shift+4, Print Screen, and Win+Shift+S produce a blank or blurred capture.
- Blocks screen recording on the same platforms. QuickTime, Loom extensions, and OS-level recording all get a blurred or blank document area.
- Logs capture attempts in the link's activity log — who tried, when, what page — even when blocked. Most teams overlook this; it's useful whether the block succeeds or fails.
- Works with dynamic watermarks. If a capture does get through, the viewer's identity is burned into every page. A phone photo of the screen still carries the watermark.
Coverage Matrix
| Platform | Native Screenshot | Screen Recording | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chrome on macOS | Blocked + Logged | Blocked | Full support. Known minor bug with arrow-key navigation blur state, fix in progress. |
| Chrome on Windows | Blocked + Logged | Blocked | Full support. |
| Edge on Windows | Blocked + Logged | Blocked | Full support. |
| Firefox on macOS/Windows | Blocked + Logged | Blocked | Full support. |
| Safari on macOS | Blocked + Logged | Blocked | Full support. |
| iOS Safari (iPhone/iPad) | Blocked (Screenshield) | Blocked (Screenshield) | Requires Screenshield (Business / Enterprise). |
| iPadOS | Blocked (Screenshield) | Blocked (Screenshield) | Requires Screenshield (Business / Enterprise). |
| Android Chrome | Blocked (Screenshield) | Blocked (Screenshield) | Requires Screenshield (Business / Enterprise). |
On supported desktop browsers, captures produce blurred/blank/no image. On mobile, enable Screenshield (Business or Enterprise tier) to block captures.
Screenshield (Advanced Screenshot Protection)
Screenshield extends screenshot and screen-recording blocking to mobile — iPhone, iPad, and Android. Available on Business and Enterprise tiers.
To enable: open your data room's link settings and toggle Screenshield on. Viewers on mobile will have screenshots and screen recording blocked, just like on desktop.
Known Issues
- Chrome + macOS arrow-key navigation blur bug. The navigation blur state doesn't always clear when arrow-keying between pages. Fix in progress.
- Very old browsers. Browsers more than two major versions behind may not run screenshot protection correctly.
If a viewer reports it's not working, confirm: (1) the link has the toggle on, (2) they're on a supported desktop browser, (3) they're not on mobile. Most "it's not working" reports are mobile users or links where the toggle was never enabled.
Enabling on a Link
- Open your data room and click Links (or Permissions).
- Open settings for the link you want to protect.
- Toggle Screenshot Protection ON.
- Save.
- Test from an incognito window on a supported desktop browser. Try to screenshot — you should see a blank/blurred capture, and the attempt should appear in the activity log within seconds.
For a fundraising deck or M&A room, the typical stack is: email verification + watermark + screenshot protection + downloads off.
Pricing
- Pro ($20/admin/month) — screenshot protection on all supported desktop browsers
- Business ($40/admin/month) — desktop screenshot protection + Screenshield (mobile blocking on iOS, iPadOS, Android)
- Enterprise — everything in Business + Screenshield
Viewers never count toward seats.
