Revoke Access to a File, a Person or a Whole Group
How to take access back in a Peony data room: set one file or folder to No access for one group, remove one person from a group, or switch a whole group off. Includes when the change takes effect and why you must click Save.

There is no separate "revoke" button in Peony. You take access back at the level you need: one file or folder, one person, or a whole group. Nothing you change applies until you click Save.
Revoke One File or Folder for One Group
- Open the data room and click Permissions in the left sidebar.
- Select the group in the Groups column.
- In the Permissions table, click No access on that row.
- Click Save at the bottom right.
The item disappears from that group's view of the room. Every other group is unaffected.
Remove One Person From a Group
How you remove someone depends on the group's access mode.
- Email access. Open the group's Visitors step, hover the person's email and click the x, then Save. Their next visit is refused. Everyone else keeps access.
- Link access. Open Email-gated access, then Edit block list to reject an email, or manage the Allow list to control exactly who is permitted. See Email access vs Link access.
Switch Off a Whole Group
In the Groups column, switch the group's toggle off. Its access link stops working, and anyone who opens it sees Failed to load link. Link not found. Other groups' links are untouched.
Setting the room's top-level row to No access reaches the same end through the permission table.
Let Access End by Itself
To end a counterparty's access on a date, set an expiry on the group instead of revoking by hand. See Set or change a link expiry.
When the Change Takes Effect
Changes apply the next time the viewer opens or refreshes the room. Someone with the document open on screen keeps seeing it until they reload.
Nothing applies until you click Save
Sliders, toggles and security cards only update the form. If you switch to another group or leave the Permissions tab without saving, the change is discarded and the item is visible again.
What Revoking Doesn't Do
Revoking access stops further access through Peony. It cannot take back a copy someone already downloaded, which is why downloads are best kept off from the start for anything sensitive. Set the file or folder to View instead of Download. See Where files are stored.
Common Questions
How fast does a revocation take effect?
On the viewer's next load of the room. A viewer with the page already open keeps seeing it until they refresh.
I removed someone, but they still show in the Visitors list.
The Visitors list keeps historical activity across every link to the room, so a revoked person can still show in the history. If you see unexpected or anonymous entries you can't explain, contact support with the link. An anonymous entry often traces back to an old open-access test link.
A visitor sees "Failed to load link. Link not found." What happened?
That group's toggle is switched off in the Groups column, which disables its access link. Switch it back on to restore access, or leave it off if the revocation was intentional. It affects only that group.
